Greetings, I’m Kaan Orçun Bakır, born in Ankara, Turkey. I hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the esteemed Middle East Technical University, and I’ve furthered my education with an MBA from Bilkent University. Beyond my academic pursuits, I’m blessed with a loving wife and a cherished daughter, who bring joy to my life.
My professional journey spans nearly a decade in the steel industry before I ventured into the dynamic world of industrial gases.
My career in Air Liquide has taken me from the lively business environment of Turkey to the bustling heart of South East Asia in Singapore. Over the years, I’ve immersed myself not only in sales but also in the complex world of business development and contracting for large-scale industrial projects.
In Asia, I stumbled upon a unique opportunity to dive into the ever-evolving domains of sustainability and energy transition. In my role, I’ve had the privilege of offering strategic guidance to Asia-Pacific country teams on their energy transition journeys. My focus was strategic investment projects geared towards low-carbon and renewable hydrogen production and towards low-carbon energy sourcing to decarbonize own assets. My fundamental aim was to support these country teams towards our company’s carbon neutrality ambitions while fostering sustainable growth.
Over more than a year by now, I am leading an exceptional team in the captivating landscape of Kazakhstan. My base is in the lovely and modern capital, Astana, yet my role frequently takes me to our Hydrogen and Airgases production sites in Atyrau, Karabatan, and Pavlodar.
The rapid pace of change in sustainability is nothing short of mesmerizing. From the signing of the Kyoto Protocol in 1995 to the historic adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015, the collective consciousness and response of both public and private sectors have been steadily evolving. However, the depth of understanding and pace of change varies widely between geographies.
My initial aspiration was to lend a helping hand to friends and my community by crafting concise blogs on pivotal topics. These posts aim to educate, raise public awareness, and sometimes provide constructive critique, all within a not-for-profit, non-academic context. Admittedly, the demands of my current assignment over the past year have left me with less time to contribute to my blog. However, I’m actively working to fix that.
I encourage you to reach out to me here or connect through my LinkedIn page. Let’s engage in conversations that drive positive change and forge a sustainable future together.
